anybody hear of this OBD code P0410 ??? secondary air injection 900 1996

I had a check engine light come on so I went to my local Auto zone to have them read it for me and he came up with this code P0410 he said it was for a secondary air injection malfunction. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

anybody hear of this OBD code P0410 ??? secondary air injection 900 1996

I have a 1995 Jag XJ6 and kept getting a "Secondary Air Pump Fault" Upon tracing the harness and researching it I finaly found the problem in a faulty connection.
In my reaserch I found the purpose of the pump........ When the car starts and is in the "Rich run" or choke mode the secondary air pump flows air to the exaust manifold (on the Jag) for anywhere from 15 seconds to a max of 4 minutes. This causes the exaust to heat the catilitic converter faster and helps reduce emmisions. One or two minutes to me is no big deal and did not make the car run any better or worse. The problem I had is while the "Check Engine" light stayed on I would not know if anything else went wrong unless the car started to run funny. After dissasembling the pump (it's electric and not belt driven and suppose to be a non-servicable item and high buck) cleaning and lubricating it, checking all hoses and check valves, replacing a relay, I finaly stumbled across a dirty connector. The light is now clear and working good.
HOW MOST WORK>>>>>>The engine computer senses engine temp rise and runs the pump when started until you get a 15 degree rise in engine temp, if the temp sensor goes out then it defaults to the intake air temp. To me a lot of technology and potential problems for an average of one minute lower pollution but we gotta have it according to EPA. I am not acquainted with the Volvo set up but that is the basic set up for most cars, like the other string said, check vaccuum hoses, blocked air hoses to the exaust especialy for carbon deposits at the manifold end, check the check valve (keeps exaust from coming back through the air hose) and also is the pump engaged when the car is cold. It may only be for a couple of minutes so it is hard to check if the car is warmed up.
Hope this helps you understand the system and helps trouble shoot it.
Good luck on finding your problem.
Dennis

Check vac lines especially those around the air injection pump. Had that code for awhile, finally fixed it when I found that a rubber connector had deteriorated on the bottom of one of the vac. lines. Do a search on this and the s90 forum, its been around before.

Thanks, going to check it tonight. Do you know anything about bleeding brakes? I have another post, but in a nut shell I was told my mc was probably bad. The pedal was soft and the guy that did my rear brakes said after bleeding the system the pedal was still soft. Bought a new mc, bench bled the mc, put it on, pressure bled the sysytem RR LR RF LF. Nothing changed, check the brickboard for ABS bleeding found the order is exactly opposite,LF RF LR RR, i did that and did get some air out of the RR. Still no change. Rebled this time pumping the brakes while the pressure bleeder was attached, got more air out of the RR. Pedal was hard, put the wheel back on lowered the car, still have a soft pedal. Don't see any apparent leaks. Going to buy another 55 gal drum of brake fluid and do it again this weekend. The rear caliper has two bleeders, maybe I'll open both at the same time.

When I'm bleeding the system I do have a short hose attached and it's immersed in a bottle of brake fluid.
Thanks
Neil

I had the same code on my 96 960. Was simply a bad vacuum connection. New connector, cleared the code, that was a year ago.

Thanks, I also have a 96 960 wagon and i had to replace the fuel rail. In the process of removing the shield over the fuel injector, i cut thru a very small diameter plastic tube that happened to be in the way. I spliced it with a short piece of tubing. That may be where my problem is.

Have you had many problems with your car? I've had a rear main oil seal replaced, flame trap and box and other numerous items fixed. Every time I went to the dealer it cost me over $1200. I finally decided to dust off my dwell meter from the 70s and start tackling these problems myself!!

Thanks
Neil

I've had very few problems with mine, but I've only had it a shade over a year. Previous owner lavished it with attention, which probably helps. Normal maintenance issues so far, i.e., rear pads, an oxygen sensor, replaced a bad thermostat seal, new spark plugs, that sort of thing. Mine has about 127,000, had 113,000 when I bought it, I expect years of service from it. My 87 745, which granted is a very different car, is about to hit 200,000, and looks set for at least another 50,000.
