3rd 'high' brake light 200 1989

So just how exactly is this cover supposed to come off of the high brake light? I've got to replace the bulb and I don't want to damage the 15 year old plastic. I can get it unclipped at the sides, but something in the middle is holding it up. Am I supposed to get a screwdriver in that hole and do something, or what?

Thanks....

I removed the entire assembly from the rear deck and then very carefully was able to get the cover off. I then replaced the bulb with the longest lasting one I could find

On my first try, I broke the damn thing into several pieces. But - I could at least look inside to find the right way.

Push in on both sides, as you have done, and see if the cover will slide upwards parallel to the window glass. IIRS that what I found.

Good Luck,

Bob

Yup, you're on the right track. To quote the Bentley Bible:

"To replace the center (3rd) brake light bulb on sedan models, insert a screwdriver into the opening in the bottom of the light assembly to depress the retaining clip. Then pull off the cover by sliding lifting it up and off. Release the reflector spring clips to acess the bulb."

Hope this helps.

Erling.
