Smoke From Radiator Fan :( 900

Yesterday I noticed a god awful smeel coming from under the hood, when I popped it open I saw smoke coming from the radiator fan and it was moving. The temp guage wasn't in the red and the engine wasn't smoking, but the fane appears to be shot. It smells liek an electrical burn. Any ideas? If I take it off is there anything particular I should be looking for?

Dear blackbeauty,

May this find you well. If the fan motor was smoking, it is past being saved. You likely can get a spare at a salvage yard. Be sure it is an exact match. Until you get the fan replaced, try to avoid driving in extreme heat and try to minimize air conditioner use. The fan kicks-in, when engine temps rise as a result of high ambient temps and/or use of the air-conditioner.

If possible, find a salvage yard, that allows you to remove the part you want. There are two reasons for doing this. First, when you remove the part, you learn how to install it. Second, if they have three cars from which you can remove a fan, you want to remove the fan from the car with the lowest number of miles.

Hope this helps, at least a bit.

Yours faithfully,

spook
