lots of smoke 700 1988

Hi to everyone.
I found this site by looking for a fix for my problem. I like it alot so far.
I have an 88 740 turbo that blew 2 qts of oil out the tail pipe and put up a smoke screen that blocked out the whole freeway behind me. I assumed it was the turbo, so I took it off to rebuild it. the car has 230,000 miles on it. and when I opened up the turbo, it didnt seem that bad,a little oily, but not that bad. I rebuilt it. the car runs great for that many miles.I checked compression and the plugs and all checked out ok. My question is WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?Was it the turbo? did I blow a head gasket?has anyone had this problemor am I overlooking something. Thanks for a response in advance

    lots of smoke 200 1981

I once owned a Yamaha Seca Turbo motorcycle, and after sitting for extended periods it would smoke and use some oil until the turbo seals loosened up and started sealing again.

I had this problem with my power steering. It puked all the oil out in my driveway, I added oil and now I can't find the leak and it's working fine. Strange.

Common problem with all 700 turbos- if there is any hole in the air hoses between the turbo and the intake manifold, the mixture will go too rich. Basically pressurized air leaks out of the hole and the engine does not get the amount of air that the Air Mass Meter measured.

Most common location is the short hose at the discharge (drivers) side of the intercooler. Fortunately it's also the cheapest one to replace. The others can be expensive. The little oil leaking from the turbo itself attacks the rubber hoses from the inside out.

Lots more good info in the 700FAQ- good reading.
    Good luck with it.

Thanks for the info Aye, some good info to know. But my problem was about 2 quarts of oil out the tail pipe.I mean thats alot of oil wouldnt you say? thats why Im confused where it actually came from. and why? the car runs too good to have a major problem. I love my car and I only want the best for it. Tanx again
