Tailgate lock is frozen 700

My 1990 745t has a frozen tailgate lock I've tried some triflow in there, regularly for a year, but it's still frozen. The power locks all still work, but I'd love to be able to open the back directly. Ill be taking off the inside panel soon - what to look for? Other approches? Any ideas for stuff to try in the cylinder?

I'm not sure if this is exactly the same condition as you currently have, but the "latch handle" on my '89 740 wagon rear door was binding and causing a lot of difficulty in opening and closing the door. This is the latch handle that you pull on with your hand to open the door -just above the license plate.
I was having to "push" forward on the handle in order to unlock, open and close the door.

The key was very difficult to turn to lock and unlock the door. Also, the automatic lock on this door would not engage or disengage the lock when the other doors were locked and unlocked. All of these problems were caused by the latch handle spring being badly corroded. Everything was fine with the electric lock motor, the lock cylinder, the latch at the bottom of the door and the linkages between the lock motor, the handle and the latch.

I removed the handle assembly and used PB Blaster and a gel rust remover in order to get the handle to move freely. I also removed the broken plastic bushing that was bewteen the spring and the shaft on the handle. I then used a liberal amount of white lithium grease to lubricate and protect these parts from further rusting. I put it back together and everything works like new, including the lock cylinder and automatic locking mechanism.

The handle assembly comes off pretty easy, after removing the plastic trim on the door, there are four bolts that secure the handle to the door. (Two of these are nuts and two are bolts to be removed.) Then carefully pull out the two linkage shafts that connect to the lock cylinder and one shaft that connects to the handle. There are small plastic fasteners that hold these shafts in place. It's not too difficult to do. Good Luck.

The 700/900 FAQ has good advice for removing the panel.

The lock cylinder itself is held in place with one clip, though the panel with the license plate bulbs may have to be removed from the tailgate to get it out. I soaked mine in PB soup for a few hours and then removed the tumblers file the crud off. Be careful to put them all back in the same order. And don't lose the springs, either.

Good luck.

You should be able to see what's frozen when you pull the inside cover off. It's not too hard to remove, but be careful of the upper corners of the panel- the fingers break off regularly.

Once inside you should be able to see the lock motor and the back side of the lock cylinder down in the door. Soak everything with PB Blaster or similar penetrating oil, and you can also remove clips and linkages to get parts of it to move separately.

Good luck!

Hello,
Have you got two keys for your car as the car has two keys an owners key that operates all locks on the vehicle including tailgate and a service key which only operates front door locks/ignition and steering lock. Maybee you only have the service key and not the owners key.

I have got the same problem I can only lock/unlock the tailgate only on the central locking and not with the key as I dont have the owners key when I bought my car used. You may be able to get one by giving volvo your chassis number to your volvo dealer and they may be able to get you one.
Hope this is of some use. James.
