Megasquirt -- What and where can I find more about it? 140-160 1975

I hear all this talk about Megasquirt, and I assume it's an alternative to the D-Jet system, but I don't know anything about it. I have a 1975 164 (a 49-state, non-catalyst version), and it could use a better alternative F.I. system (for quicker starts, better fuel mileage, more power, etc.).
Is there a book or manual that explains Megasquirt, describes what it can do, and/or how I could design it's mapping (what it would require). I'm pretty handy with tools and electrical fabrication (even a little "descrete component" electronics a la Heathkit projects of the '60's and '70's), but I don't have access to a dynamometer or anything "big bucks" like that.

Even some introductory remarks to tell me exactly what this system can replace in my car would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If you go with Megasquirt, don't forget the flyback board, for use with your D-jet injectors 140-160 1975

Either that or resistors. The problem withg the resistors is that they slow down the rate the injector opens, and thus reduces the minumum pulse width. This can be a problem depending on the engine's idle needs and the flow rate of the injectors you are using. I'm thinking that *probably* isn't an issue with a normally aspirated B20 using standard D-Jet injectors. Without the forced induction we don't need the really high flowing injectors, and thus we can get an proper idle without an exceedingly short duration injection.

Although apparently the cost differential is pretty small...

I was casually looking into alternatives to using the D-Jet hardware for a MS install and found these cute little buggers on the TWM site:

http://www.twminduction.com/ThrottleBody/su_throttle.html

Aren't those neat! Bolt right on where a pair of SU's were taken off.

I was looking into a set of DCOE replacement throttle bodies for my PV. But while the throttle response would probably be better, spending all that money when I can scrounge D-Jet parts for free probably isn't going to happen. At least not initially. They might make for an interesting upgrade later, maybe if I can find a cheap used set somewhere...

This what i got for prices recently:

2700-4501 13/4" throttle body $257.52 each
( price is same for 11/2" and 2")
2700-5801 Fuel rail kit for two throttles $162.06
2800-6411 Rail mounted regulator
with manifold vacuum reference. $239.20
2900-2013 50lb/hr injectors
(a pair of these is good for 160HP) $125.00 each
when purchased with the throttles.
2900-3040 Throttle Position sensor $74.46
2900-3042 Plug for TPS $14.78

Less the injectors and it is $1005 and change. A mite pricey but an interesting option!

I have a book mark on the site. Kinda like a dog eared Xmas catalog page when we were kids, eh?
Sberry has a package of parts to include MS box, harnesses, relay board,TPS, and FP Regulator for $750, That is very tempting, I must say!

I figure I'll just concentrate on getting MSnS up and running using D-Jet manifold, injectors, and fuel rail since I can get all that stuff for free. I don't think the D-Jet manifold and throttle will be a limiting factor on my engine. Key word being 'think'.

I might try some DCOE style ITBs later on if:
a) I win the lottery
b) I find them used on eBay

I suppose MS could tell me if the DJet throttle is limiting performance by looking at the MAP data at full throttle - and seeing how close it gets to 100%. If it gets pretty close - not a factor. If the MAP droops at WOT and high rpm then there could be an issue.

"If the MAP droops at WOT and high rpm then there could be an issue."

The assumption in this case being, the intake is restricting the intake flow?

Sounds logical. I would be pleased with the 130 gross hp delivered by a B20E. D-Jet with the "Squirt" is more appealing to me all the time.

IPD got 200hp out of the D-jet set up with a modid brain. Megasquirt would be even better! 140-160 1975

Exactly. Any flow restrictions (resonant or physical) from the runners on in is past my shade tree mechaniking anyhow.

I do have a modified head (ported, big valves, double valve springs, 1.6 roller rockers). I haven't checked yet to see if the intake ports are bigger than stock - if so I might think about tryign to ream the D-Jet runners out slightly to match. Or at least polishing them up a bit.

I don't know how much of a restriction the D-Jet throttle valve will be, though. I would imagine they gave it a very healthy excess capacity as designed for a 130 HP engine.

It seems as though D-Jet is a pretty good start on the hardware you need. The manifold, injectors, fuel rail, fuel pump are all good. I think the fuel pressure regulator, MAP sensor, and throttle switch need to be replaced. I think you can either software tweak around the D-Jet air and water temp sensors or use other more modern ones. If you get the Spark option you can either trigger that from points (likely with a fixed distributor advance mechanism) or with an electronic system if you have it.

I've decided to jump into that on my PV instead of tinkering endlessly with the fun but somewhat erratic DCOE's I have on it now. My skills are such that I could certainly never lead the way in such a thing, but I will gladly tail closely behind those that do.
