Check Engine Light 700 1989

Last night i was driving around town and i came to a stop light. I was at it for a few minutes. The next thing i knew the car was shakeing alot. The light turned green and i pulled into a park and ride lot. Now when this happened no lights or anything came on. I shut the car off after i parked and looked under the hood. I checked the oil and it was fine. I closed the hood and started the engine and since then the light stays on. I have also come to notice i smell more fumes coming into the cabin now then ever before and the only time it shakes is when it is idleing in park or stopped in drive. Other then that the car drives fine and all the vitals are great. Now i have had a bad catytlic converter (Sorry for the spelling) about 2 months now but my mech. told me not to worry until i get close to inspection which is sill another year away. I was wondering if that could have something to do with it.

Well just went to the auto shop today and they found that i need a catalytic converter and a oxygen censor. Two things i would not really think that it would be. Now i have a really good question that i forgot to ask the shop. How do you find out if you have a dual or single cam shaft. I see that is needed in order to find the rite converter. All the help you have gave has been helpful thanks again.

Your car has diagnostics in built (assuming it is non turbo). Read the fault code to assist locating the problem. See the FAQ section for details.

Check for a loose spark-plug wire.
