Is my '92 245 more likely to have a ZF or Cam gear steering rack? I know my inner tie rods and tie rod ends need to be replaced, but I can't locate the service plate that FCP refers to determine the steering gear (anyone know where this plate is on the wagon, or if the '92s even indicate the steering gear specs anywhere)? I know I can also crawl under the car to inspect the ends, but I just haven't made the time to do it (yes, I've been a bit lazy of late).

I never did find the plate on my wagon.
I just did the rack in my car. I read somwhere that you can tell the difference quite easily IF it is a factory rack. Look at the ends of the bellows where the tie rod comes through. If it necks down to the size of the tie rod it is a cam rack. if it is flat and about an 1-1/4" in diameter it is a ZF rack. It was accurate on mine but my rebuilt ZF came with the other bellows so unless it is factory don't count on it. I also noticed that there is a ZF inside a circle molded into the casting near where the steering linkage connects, but for the life of me I can't remember if it is down where you can see it or up when installed.

Look for a vehicle ID plate on the top of the passenger side strut tower in the engine bay. The VID consists of nothing more than groups of super-secret Volvo numbers. There is a secret decoder ring on this board somewhere I believe that will identify the field and values to help you out. The Volvo parts dept. should be able to give you printout from VADIS too if you ask them.

In my 86 245DL, the service plate is located in the hidden compartment of the cargo area.
