Speedometer r0,980 1985 240dl 200

The speedometer on my 1985 244 DL (r0,980) is no longer functioning properly. Any ideas where I can get one? I tried the local dealer and was told that they couldn't get it.

Thanks in advance for the help.

William,

Try this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7941008322&category=33675&sspagename=WDVW

Good luck.

Mario

Thanks a lot Mario!!!

Looks like a winner to me, and a lot cheaper than the junk yard. Not only that but it has the whole instrument cluster.

I placed a bid on it.

You are lucky they could not, as I recall speedos are $700 or so at dealers. Salvage yards are the only alternative that makes sense. Then it will be hit or miss as to quality. Look only at 81-85 speedos with 120 mph dials. Pick one that has miles registering on the odometer and pray. You should pay about $10 for one. If you do not feel able to pull one, you will not want to install one so the repair cost escalates from $10 if you have a mechanic install it.

Thanks for the reply. The dealer initially charged about $400 but had to give me a refund. The local junkyard has one but it's more like $150 not $10 that they are asking, with 143,835 miles on it. I can put it in myself in about 15 mins, really easy work.

Bob's right - that's extortion. Maybe you were wearing a 3-piece suit when you came through their door? I get the feeling some of them set prices on that kind of logic!

I've pulled a couple of complete clusters with working speedos and large tachs in the U-pull yards: $25 apiece. Try another yard - someone's got to have a better grip on reality. And wear dirty jeans.

If you can wait for the Xmas rush to pass, I have a cable-drive r0,980 (85MPH) around here somewhere - email me if interested: petroeng(at)shaw.ca

Also, check eBay.

That's what I thought. I called them so they had no idea what I looked like though. I think it's too little competition. I'm trying Mario's ebay route for now but if it doesn't work out I'll let you know.

Thanks a lot for the help.

$150 is extortion, still.

the pick n pull by me charges $7.50 for any gauge, regardless if its speedo, tach,, gas, temp....or car, Ford, GM, Volvo, BMW...

If you shop at places like this, you get Volvo parts for Ford or GM prices. I once pulled out a 16" pusher fan from a Mercedes for my 144's A/C for 12 bucks. Not to mention my old 144 sounding like a 850 with that fan on!
