Adding side markers--Wiring? 200 1989

I've ordered a side European flasher light kit, more commonly known as side markers, from VLVWorld. I'm wondering how other Brickboarders who have added this feature to their American Bricks have wired them.

The quick and dirty way seems to splice them into the line for the turn signal on the respective side. However, I've also seen a few tips on how to run them through the parking lights so they are illumniated with the parking lights, but flash in sync with the turn signals. From what I understand, as a running light, the signal draws power from the parking light wire and grounds through the turn signal wire. When the light is flashing, it gets its power from the turn signal and grounds through the parking light.

However, I'm not sure if that method of wiring works on the 240s. I would think that, if one wired the flasher to the parking lights and turn signal lights, the marker would always stay on (since it's always getting power from either the turn signal or parking light). Is that not the case?

Have any Brickboarders gotten the side markers to function as both "running" lights and side turn signals, even if it required creative wiring? Is it much easier to go the simple way and have them illuminate only when the turn signal is flashing?

tell me how it goes because I'm interested. do the lights come with bulbs and the actual wiringt kits? if so, that's a pretty nifty ptrice. thanks for the link of the place.

btw, I remember reading some website where it says you have to remove the front wheels to get the wires to the corner lights. the site and along with what I've read here makes this too easy to be true! please tell me this is an easy weekend afternoon job!

If you have connectors which mate to the side markers themselves, the rest of the project is about a 1 hour job. I have no idea why someone thinks the wheels need to be removed... that was not necessary on the 240's and the 850 I did. The results are well worth the effort.

I installed these on my '92 245 (ambr lights on white car) and it's juust one more thing that visually separates the enthusiast car from the rest of the pack.

I'm too lazy to dig thru wiring manuals, but I just looked to see how they are wired. They are spliced into the white and blue turn signal/parking light wires on the passenger side, and the white and green wires on the driver's side. This way they come on with the parking lights and will flash with the turn signals (although out of sync - side marker flashes on when turn signal flashes off). I think that's the effect you're looking for. Wiring these on a 240 is easy... just use a stiff wire to push the wires down into the 'black hole' on the aft side of the wheel arch under the hood.

Yep, that method of wiring is what I shall do. Thanks for telling me which color wires to use.

I was wondering why the turn signals would *not* be illuminated while both the turn signal and parking light wires were hot. I then realized that the two currents cancel each other out--both lines have the same voltage, so none goes through the light (and it goes dark). Thus, the side markers would be illuminated with the parking lights and flash when appropriate (albeit on opposite timing from the turn signals). It makes sense now.

Good question. I have ordered the amber ones for my 88, but have not wired them yet, as I'm trying to figure out how to make them function as both and get the time to work on it! Did you get the clear or amber ones?

Amber. Clear wouldn't look right, especially with my amber front turn signal lenses.
