belt tensioner alignment 900 1994

Removed the belt tensioner and noticed that the belt was not centered on the
pulley. Also noticed that the pulley had dug a groove into the outer timing belt cover. Can anyone tell me if the tensioner is bad(it looks ok) or out of alignment some how. This is a 960 with B6304S engine.

Dear kan960,

Good a.m. and may this find you well.

DEFINITELY REPLACE THE TIMING BELT AND TENSIONER. DO IT NOW!!!!

If the belt breaks/slips off the pulley, your engine is ruined. This will be very costly to fix.

DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR AT ALL, UNTIL BELT AND TENSIONER REPLACED!!

Take a taxi to the parts house, work, shopping, etc., until you get this done.

Post back with any questions: the 960 experts will help.

All the best for the New Year.

Yours faithfully,

spook

Consider yourself told, part is very easy to change. Get a belt too.

Sorry for not being clear, but the tensioner in question is for the surpintine belt that drives the power steering pump, alternator, and a/c compressor. It looks like shims under the mounting bolts might solve this problem. Possible the last guy lost them.
