I found an 89 245 in the salvage yard with a 4 speed over drive ,and plan on putting the transmission in my 89 240,the clutch in mine is very near the end as it has never been replaced in 285k,,,the listing do not include 89 240;s with 4 speed overdrive- anyone familiar with this scenario? ...blessings...kris---- do i just buy the kit for my year of car....?

The 4spd+OD gearbox that you pulled from the salvage yard '89 was not original to that car. That is why you are having trouble locating an M46 clutch kit for an '89 240 - there is no such beast! The owner probably found himself in your situation; a blown M47 and no desire to repeat the experience.

Is the clutch on the salvage yard M46 in good order? If the owner opted for a new clutch and it hasn't been that long since the transplant, you are probably good to go as is. If not, you'll need an '85-'86 200 series clutch kit. IPD carries this item under part number WS4K1010, for $159.00.

Just found FCP Groton has it for about $120. Seems to be Sachs components, so should be good stuff.

I'm about to buy one of their kits for my 87, which needs a new clutch to replace the original at 237K. I suppose that's good enough service life...

For what it's worth, I go through clutches every 200K miles or so.

At this point, it's starting to seem like routine maintenance.

M47's in 240's from 87 to 93 use the exact same clutch. No need to futz around with a different gearbox, you'll have to replace the clutch on that one before putting it in your car as well.

I put an M46 from about 86 into my 93, which had an M47 5-speed. It works well with the original clutch.
