pretty much all older tech turbos have a mean life expectancy of 100,000 miles, if you maintain them as you would a N/A, ie, oil changes every 3000 miles, and shut down after hard runs without letting it idle.. If you change oil more frequently (ie, 1500 miles), and let it idle after hard runs, you can squeeze more out of them, how much more, I can't say.

I don't have much experience with volvo turbos, but toyota CT-26 turbos display this pattern, as have others I've looked at over the years.

Volvo recommendation is 5k oil changes. Even then, many of these later water cooled turbos that Volvo used made it 120k without taking in any special care. It's not like the older oil cooled ones.

It's not more frequent oil changes, but synthetic that helps big time.

SO what you guys are sayin is that if I get a later 740/760 from a caring owner that runs Mobile 1, and makes sure to do cool-downs, then the turbo should last at least a good 200k miles with no probs.

If so, then I'm gonna consider a 740 turbo sedan over the more basic, 240 sedans.

Thanks for the help guys!

hate to be the relayer of bad news but mine went out at 90K miles. The oil seals in the turbo went south and the car started blowing smoke real bad. Did regular oil changes and tried to let it cool down after hard runs.

381,000 on my Mitsu '87 745. No cooldown other than reducing load on the highway prior to shutdown. Shell Rotella T 15W-40 every 3,000 - Mann filter.

I did replace the seals and bearings a couple years ago but no replacement of turbine shaft, center housing or compressor wheel.

209+k on my '91 with the Garrett T25. I use synthetic oil (Mobil 1) and do a cooldown period before shutoff.

Mine has 255k on the original mitsu. It's an 1988. Just keep changing your oil. Use synthetic and let your car idle for a couple seconds before shutting it off if you have lead foot syndrome.
