Installing trunk lid strut 140-160

I removed one of my trunk lid struts with the intention of installing another pair of used. But I've changed my mind and will keep these struts for a while longer - they're not really that bad anyway. So, does anyone have any good ideas how to fit the strut back in place under the package shelf and behind the hinge? It seems I will need to improvise some kind of tool to compress it before sliding in place, and I was hoping somebody out there have done it already.

Thanks,
Kåre

Unless you are really small, you should be able to compress it with your body weight.

Once it it compressed, hold it that way with some bailing wire.

Get in the trunk. Cover the latch with a rag so you can't get locked in!

Lower the lid so the compressed strut fits the gap. Cut the bailing wire.

It is amazing that others improvise the very same way I've done this in the past with bailing wire, but I wasn't smart enough to cover the latch.
