940 AC 900

My 940 AC will not hold an R34 charge from more then 48 hours or so. What am I looking at in terms of possible repairs and costs? Thanks !

I would consider looking to see if the A/C hose fittings are leaking. My 940 turbo wagon kept loosing refrigerant. Finally found the leaks in the fittings on the hoses. Primarily the one that leaves the compressor and goes across the bottom of the radiator. When checked I found the refrierant/oil leaking onto the stone panel from the hose.

Spook is correct this is a big leak, should be easy to find at a competent shop. My experience with aftermarket AC parts is be careful. If you need a condenser I recommend OEM, shop around you can find it at an OK price.

I think the general consensus is that if the evaporator needs to be replaced (usual suspect), then you are looking at about $1,200. That's about what I paid for my repair....only to now have the AC clutch die on me.

Dear diceman,

Good a.m. and may this find you well. This is a big leak. A fluorescent dye - injected along with refrigerant - will quickly find its source. The AC technician will use an ultraviolet (black) light to find the leak. When the light hits the place, from which the R134a is leaking, the dye will glow brightly!

It could be as simple as a loose hose and/or a failed rubber "O" ring. It could be a failed evaporator or condensor.

Based on prices from www.fcpgroton.com, compressors run $200-300 (part only). Evaporators and condensors about $180-200 each (a lot of labor to install an evaporator). Hoses can be from $50-125, depending on type and manufacturer.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

spook
