OD trans. 140-160

I bought what I thought was a m410 trans w/OD. for my 1972 142s, however when I went to install it, the trans. itself is a bit larger than the regular 4spd. and the bell housing also is a bit larger in diameter than the original and won't bolt up. The splines on the input shaft also look different.
What transmission/OD do I have?
Is it from a 240 series maybe ...M46 maybe? How would I find out what it is?
another thing, the shifting rods that the gear changing forks ride on protrude out of the front of the transmission and into recesses in the bell housing,(there is a gasket between the transmission and the bell housing).
Any Ideas?
Thank you

The M410 should go in nicely if you use an M40 bell housing. This is a nice tranny, stronger bearings, lower final gear, 0.58:1, IIRC. It is a nice conversion to a built B20 in a 142. You will need some extra ummph from that B20 to push it. I would also reccomend using the 164 driveshaft also. The stock 140 shaft won't bolt up to the flange unless you've got the 2 1/2 in U-joints. You can change the flange from any M40 to get the smaller shaft to bolt-up.
I got a hold of an M410 from a '69 164 incl shaft and crossmember for $50 from the paper. I put it in a race bred '68 144s that had 200 hp and it flew for 18 yrs and 280k miles without problems.
Good Luck!

Um... ???

that sounds like it was a long time ago. Are you sure you're not forgetting all the modifications you had to make to the input shaft and/or that M40 bellhousing...? Not to question it couldn't be done, but I can't see it being that easy... Or might your M410 come out of a early 1800e?

What you have is the classic M410 tranny in its normal form, made to bolt up
to a B30 engine. Not sure why you wanted this tranny for the 142.
An M41 is the tranny you want. There were some M410 trannies made for the
1800 for maybe one or two years that had the special smaller bellhousing
that would bolt up to the B20 but they are RARE and not particularly
desirable for the B20. In fact I wish I could find an easy way to use an
M41 on my 164, but I would have to have a custom hybrid bellhousing made
to do that, since the B30s bellhousing bolts up to a flange about an inch
bigger than the B20. The M410 has lube/bearing issues on the layshaft and
will become noisy in about 100,000 miles. It will continue to work OK for
a LONG time but the noise is objectionable. The M41 does not have this problem,
and is plenty sturdy for about any B20.

Sounds like a M46. Has the bellhousing perhaps got the right shape but is it just tilted?

The larger bellhousing makes it sound like an M410 from a 164 with a B30 engine. Not really something you can hang onto the back of a B20. At least, no easier than putting any other sort of trans that doesn't fit on.

A small number of early 1800E's had the M410 trans on them - different bellhousings and (I think) different input shaft splines on those though.

Gasket between the transmission and bell housing makes it sound like a M46.
I don't think you can fit a M46 up to a pushrod engine...easily anyway.

OD trans. 140-160

Hi, Everyone.
Thank you for all the input. I looked at the trans/OD again and realized that I am looking for a M41. It has been a long time since I've had a Volvo to work on,(25 years or so).
It looks like I actually have an M46, The bell housing is a bit too big and bolts up at an angle like the SOHC engines of the 240's.
...Damn, I bought the wrong tranny, sigh. I got it cheap however.
Still looking for a M41 then. If anyone knows of one close to the NY area please let me know. Thanks
