Lower fuel consumption by resetting ECU? 900 1994

Anyone with same experience?

My mechanic said he did a reset of the Electronic control box (ECU). I thought nothing of it until I did a fule consuption check and found out that the car did have a fuel consumption of 8,4L/100km, and this with a full load of four people and packing. Normaly it uses up 9,5L/100km. Now a year later itīs back to "normal".
Does anyone have the same experience? I have cheked the unit for errors but there is nothing. No point in resetting the unit if there is no errors??

Does it have something to do with the internal program the unit runs? Maybe the unit goes into a default mode with standard timmings etc. insead of optimized after a while, just thinking...

Anyone with any info or thoughts on this...

//Peter

You are not the only one with that question.

Disconnected battery on 95 940, 135k miles, to install new CD (indirectly reset ECU). This resulted in a 2 mpg reduction in gas mileage (I keep a log). After about 10 days, including 2 highways trips totalling 12 hours, the mileage was back up to the normal 23.5 mpg.

Don't know if this was due to ECU 'relearning', but that was my experience.

Happy New Year

I assume by "reset" he meant that he disconnected the battery for several minutes, then reconnected the battery. As I understand it, the ECU has an adaptive learning function. This function helps maintain the proper fuel and timing settings for mainly idle conditions. When you disconnect the ECU, it loses the information on driving habits, altitude, color of the driver's socks, and other vital information.

When the battery is reconnected and the car driven again, the ECU must relearn the needed information. I've seen recommendations from Volvo to its technicians to avoid "driveability" problems for the customer by giving several short stop and start runs. The information I read said that it may take 12 to 15 start engine, drive and stop engine cycles to allow the ECU to relearn.

I suppose it is possible that this resetting process might affect the gas mileage but I've never heard of it before. According to my Volvo manual, the adaptive learning function serves to adjust idle speed and mixture to make up for normal aging of the O2 sensor, the injectors, and maybe other sensors. The fact that Volvo says driveability is affected makes me think that more than the idle and mixture settings are affected.

As an experiment, you could disconnect the battery, reconnect it and see if mileage and driveability are changed. Let us know what you find out. Of course, over a year's time, many other things could act to lower your gas mileage.

Thanks for the swift response...

I will start by talking to my car repair guy to find out exactly what he did, maybe it will cost me a bottle of wiskey...
Iīll be in touch about the progress...
