Me Me Megasquirt! 140-160

Just a quick note to you guys. I got my Megasquirt running today! Smooth idle and great throttle responce. I can't wait to see my MPG compaired to my duel Webbers.

John

Could someone fill me in on what a megasquirt is? Is it primarily for the B20's or does it work on the fuel injected B30's as well? I am pretty ignorant of the mechanical part of the car but I do great upholstery work!

MegaSquirt is an open source (i.e. free software source files that you can modify) electronic fuel injection project that you can build yourself for probably $300 including all parts.

It is most certainly not specific to the B20, or even Volvo's in general. It is designed to be a very flexible and adaptable system. I think you could use it to run anything from a chainsaw to a V16 by adapting appropriate hardware and adjusting the settings. You can also have it manage the ignition advance (based on MAP and RPM) by locking down the advance in your distributor and feeding the signal to the computer instead of the coil.

I've got a computer on the way, and sometime over the spring I'll be putting it on the PV. The DCOE's were fun, but my O2 meter showed them to be very inconsistent, and I don't feel like spending hundreds of dollars on brass parts tuning them - I'd rather spend that money on an injection system that I can then tweak to my heart's content without further expense.

I have a slight issue with my car in that the modified 'race' head I have (reshaped combustion chamber, big valves, ported, dbl valves springs) doesn't have injector ports on it. So I'm looking into ways to put injectors on other than just using D-Jet injectors. Either drilling and machining the head to accept D-Jet holders, machining it to fit more modern injectors, or welding injector bungs on the D-Jet manifold, slightly farther upstream. Or possibly even using my DCOE's manifold and getting some DCOE style throttle bodies.

You can do what I did 140-160

I made up my own fuel rail and welded in injector pockets into a D-jet manafold. I got all the parts from Summit Racing.

Excelent! I have not really looked closely to the FI manifold I got a year ago, until I saw these photos yesterday. Did not realise that the FI head had injector ports, and was disappointed as my engine is a B20B. Was thinking in the same line as you, especially now that I see it can be done.

I'm also interested in what injectors you've used. Is it a "black art" to get it right, or do you just fit them at 90 degrees (or 30 degrees?) to the air flow and the tip in the middle? Or as high as possible so the fuel spray down into the air stream? Oh, I'm getting excited. Did it run first time, or did you have to do a bit of tuning before it would run?

Thanks, and have fun...

I don't know the exact angle of the injectors but they are in the 45 degre angle department. They are all the same angle since I drilled the holes for them on a Bridgport. I then had a local welder weld em up for me. As you can see he charged me 35$ to weld em in.
Yes it did start the first time. Just like the instructions said it might. I did and still have, some fine tuning to do.
I picked injectors that are for an Oldsmobile Quad 4 engine. That motor puts out about the same hp that I dream my mild B20 puts out. I think they are 23 or 24lb/hr high impedence injectors from Accell at Summit Racing for about 24$ each. I'm sure fuel starvation won't be a problem since I'm only using the IPD Torque performance cam. ...
Hmm...... Turbo now? :)

Is that the MSD Ignition parts I see here: http://www.msdignition.com/fuel_9.htm

That was the direction I was thinking of going in - drilling the manifold and using those pockets. It's no great loss if I hose up a D-Jet manifold, but I would hate to foul up my head.

What style of injector are you using, and how are they held in? I'd love to see a pic or two of your manifold setup.

I picked up a couple of D-Jet manifolds this weekend. One is pretty crusty and I'll probably try my hand at using some aluminum wire in my MIG and welding in a pocket or two for practice. If it works well, I'll try on the nice manifold.

glad to see your up and running. i will be installing ms&s in the next couple of weeks.
here are some pics of the stuff i had to fabricate for the install.

got any new pics of the install. would love to see what other people have done.

is your b20 modified at all? just woundering what your ve tables are like?

I'll try to get some pictures of the install maybe tomorow. My B20 uses an IPD torque perf cam, Isky valve springs and pushrods. I ported the head myself and put in hardend exhaust seats and cleaned up all the surfaces. The bottom end is all ballanced with the flywheel. Oh yea, 40 over pistons. B18 distributor Crane opticle triger with an MSD 6AL and blaster coil. Sometimes I regret the torque cam, but when I towed a MG Midget on a towe dolly from Mass to Cleveland I was not. I also liked the cam when I towed a U-Haul form Lynchburg Va to Cleveland full of antiques.
Here's a pic of my surge tank (not finished being hooked up.
A clos up of the fuel rail.

PS... Dude ! Nice Rake!:)

What's a surge tank? (Still learning about the mechanical side of things...) 140-160

holds reserve fuel so there are no air bubbles in the hp fuel pump supply line. 140-160
