Cost of Mobil 1 (synthetic) at a quick lube place 900

No question here, just an observation. I've been changing the oil myself in my Volvo, primarily to ensure that a Mann filter is put on and not some generic brand. I also use Mobil 1.

Cost (US$) =
$20 for Mobil 1 (5 quart jug from Walmart)
$4 for a Mann filter
$0.50 for a new copper ring

Plus tax, it's around $27 or so.

I stopped by a Brahler quick lube place since they had on their marquee that they now carry Mobil 1 to see what they charge. A basic oil change is $25, plus a $30 surcharge for using Mobil 1, so $55 plus tax, and that's with a generic filter. I'll keep changing it myself...

The worst part of a quickie lube is that they don't use a new crush washer, and if they loose the old one, they just impact wrench the drain plug on until it has welded to the pan. Ask me how I know ..... Previous owner had them do an oil change, not me.

When my son was away at college, an oil change came due and I told him to get the Quickie-lube to do it using Mobil-1 and the Mann filter he had in the trunk. The tab was $50+, and when he showed up back home that summer, there was some dark green abomination sticking out of the engine block and the Mann was still in the trunk. They refused to install it. I have other "Quickie-lube stories (don't we all?), but....enough.

That must be a 940 and your Walmart sells something mine doesn't carry.

My 960 takes 6 qts to bring the oil to the mark half way between add and full. The local Cosco sells the 6 Qt case of 10W30 or 5W30 Mobil 1 for $23.95 plus tax of 5% here in the Boston area. So every once in a while I have to buy and "extra" case to have some for filling to the FULL mark plus my car uses about a Qt every 2K miles. A case of 10 Manns online, was about $43 as I remember.

Quick lube places are notorious for using the cheapest help that they can
get, which results in fluids not being checked correctly, wrong parts being
used, and worst of all, drain plug problems (loose or stripped).
I have the Taurus done at the local Ford dealer (I went to school with his
brother) and the Volvos I do myself. At least if I screw it up I know what
I did!

You forgot one of the costs - the cost of a new engine because the pimple-faced high school kid forgot to tighten the drain plug ... that is, if they even put it back in the first place.

And the generic filters that some of those places use are indeed cheap. The filter I pulled off my '90 was made in China.

-- Kane ... and no, it does not have a good anti-drainback valve.

I've been able to locate a garage in my neighborhood that will change the oil with my oil and filter for $8. He's extremely honest person who doesn't believe that's "mechanic's" work! He also does much of my routine maintenace items; brakes, timing belt, tires, etc. How about that?

The quickie chains love to use their impact wrenches also on your pan bolts. Leave them your Mobil 1 and they will take it home and fill your car with the cheapest crap dino oil they can find.
