put in new stereo but #1 fuse keeps blowing......... 200 1986

I recently put in a new CD player into my '86 245, stereo works fine but about every few weeks, the #1 fuse keeps burning out. I've replaced it about 4 times now and would like a permanent fix for the problem but don't know what to do. Any suggestions (aside from getting rid of the stereo)?

Modern head units have two 12V hookups...a heavier(usually Yellow) wire that goes to a constant power source (like Fuse No. 8), and a (usually Red) smaller wire that goes to a switched power source - like Fuse No.1.

The Red wire is the 'turn-on' and signals the unit to fire up. It draws very little power. The main source of power - and some of these units can draw a lot - is the Yellow. If you have connected the Yellow to fuse No.1, and you play at loud volume, it may blow, since there are other loads on that fuse and it's just an 8A rating.

Professional installers often run a separate, 15A fused line from the battery right to that Yellow when they install a high-power head unit.

Was the stereo new when you put it in?
