Importing a 15 year or older volvo to Canada ...????? 200

Has anyone had experience with importing a Volvo that is 15 years or older from the USA to Canada ????

It appears by the Transport canada website - that older cars are not subject to all the modifications (about $3000) that newer cars are subject to...

thanks in advance

Yep, no problem. I imported a 1991 745SE. Piece of cake. Even though it wasn't 15yrs. old it was no problem. I had to supply a child seat harness and daytime running lights(just a switch change). Inspection for federal is free( Canadian Tire), provincial you pay for (100 bucks or so). Contact the registrar of imported vehicles on transport canada's website. You also need a letter from manufacturer stating all recalls have been ammended. Very inexpensive 15yrs. old or not.

not all provinces req the emissions testing... 200

as here in Saskatchewan it's not req'd, and not even done. I had my CAT cutoff my 86 Nova/Corolla to increase (incrementally) the performance, and reduce fuel consumption (also marginally).

Unggthat imported his '86 in recently into Ont. from Ohio. If you don't find any of his posts about it, you could try emailing him.

Should be fine; will need a certification inspection, or something like that. Check out the Registrar of Imported Vehicles website.

you can count me into that club too!!! 200

I'm in Regina and in search for a Volvo to replace my excessively rusted out 86 Nova (Corolla). Considering I want something sporty and fun, yet very reliable and easy to work on, I could not think of a better car to buy. I have considered Volvos in Alta., and BC, but most of those are too overpriced IMO, I mean most of these cars are going at the same selling price that I bought my BMW for.

That being said, if there's anyone who knows the associated costs of bring the car into Canada, as well as the inspections, that would be great!

thanks guys,
Stanley

There will be no fuss. That rule is about recent vehicles and in my experience is specifically about glass tint and daytime running lights to meet Transport Canada standards. Nothing old is listed on their website, and they have a comprehensive list of what they check for on what make and model (don't have the link handy).
I brought my 81 from BC to Ontario through the States. The border guys just laughed when I told them I had driven all the way... it did have BC plates though.
At my local vehicle licensing office they just wanted the bill of sale and the relevant provincial safety standards certificate; again nothing about mods.
I believe that since the cars are essentially worthless in any economy that values new things, you won't get any hassle; combine that with a shaggy dog story and you won't have trouble.

Interesting story

You drove a BC car through the states to Ontario. That is different than importing a USA car to Canada.

If you had driven a car with Maine plates into Canada - you would have had an entirely differnet experience.

I'm thinking of buying a car in the USA and importing it to Canada..

Hi,

Haven't done it myself but many have. Not too difficult apparently. I have a bit of a file garnered from these pages; email me at trumpet(SPAM OUT)@foothillsbrass.ab.ca and I can copy it too you.
