the compartment that's on the passenger-side of wagon, by the wheel. I don't use mine and rarely open it mainly because it's a hassle to just remove and replace the cover, and I don't know what to put inside! the interior is oddly shaped for me to fit anything valuable inside, like a laptop. and the lid is too cumbersome to really use it on a consistent basis. I have thought about putting in an empty emergency gas can (plastic rectangular one), but the space was too awkward to fit the can in without it moving about. so what do any of you brick nuts use it for? and what do you guys put inside? I need some ideas because it would be nice to have some use for this secret compartment. I feel only we volvo owners know about this secret space.

A hydraulic jack as the Volvo jacks have limited use. But that means I have no washer fluid for the back window.

Hi. The "subject line" says it all. For my new '73 Volvo 164, it was listed under Volvo accesssories -- though in retrospect it was probably somewhat dangerous. But it was perfectly sized and shaped for that compartment.

Hunting knife and limb saw (tornado land, fallen trees very common)
EXS flight kit (put it in a year ago when testing a cessna 182, in case the seller didn'thave anything on board, and just never took it out.)
1 spare quart of oil
1 spare quart of dextron
1 8oz bottle of brake fluid
full set of spare belts
3 small rolls of wire, assorted connectors and crimp tool
assorted spare bulbs
1 disposable camera
The lid barely fits, but I need to take out the flight kit and I'll have just enough room for a small gas jug.

6 flares
1 fire extinguisher
1 first aid kit
a bar of soap, a rag, and a roll of toilet paper in a ziplock bag
1 camping flashlight
1 set of tire chains (cable, they don't weigh much)
1 25' rope, 1000 lb nylon
1 set of home-made jumper cables
complete set of old belts (including timing belt)
I use a large 4-5 lb fire extinguisher rather than a 1 lb automotive one. I understand that it is rated to only 125F and may pop its pressure cap in a hot closed car, but I have been in the position of having too small a fire extinguisher before, and I'll take my chances with making a mess in my 'secret compartment'.
I carry a fire extinguisher in every vehicle I use, and I leave them in when I sell the car. I have never owned a car that caught fire, but in the past 30 years, I have put a fire on my company pickup, and three different fires in cars of people I saw along side the road. My experience is that it is hard to put out burning tires and leaking fuel, and the car-sized extinguishers are not big enough.

I had a new 145 years ago and plopped a fire extinguisher in the car as an afterthought aswe took off on a 5000 mile trip. Fuel line broke and a fire started going up a mountain in NH. One quick blast and it was out. I carry one now out of habit.

I've always carried a fire extingusher in my cars and trucks, as well as my boats. I've yet to use them, but for some stupid reason, I neglected to put one in my motorhome and last year the generator caught fire. THANK GOD for kind souls and specifically a trucker who stopped and loaned me his.
Fixed the damage (MUCH WIRING DAMAGE) and now have a lil 5lb red snuffer on board. Sadly, I've yet to find a replacement generator.

Mine rusted out. It was shaped like the other side - a phony spare tire well. I cut out the rusted bottom and made a square box from sheet metal. It's riveted in place with the seams sealed. I may go back later and weld them now that I got a wire feed welder. This makes a great tool box. I even had a small fire extinguisher on a bracket in there until I took it in to be recharged and forgot to pick it up (about four years ago). On the sedan, you can actually put a second spare tire in it if you remove the top part.

I'm not sure how you can cram anything but a donut in there. On my car, the fuel fill line comes in above this opening. If I could cram my second spare tire back there it would free up a bunch of space.
Though I would have to find a new place for my Glock.

The lid stays off - the space has rubber over boots (army surplus cheapies) booster cables, tow chain - or at times - welding gear, or at other times a gallon liquid container - so it cannot tip over....
If anyone has corrsion (rust) problems with these compartments - consider marine fiberglass resin & matting repair - My 78 242 had the bottom rusted right out when I bought it - lined it with thin cardboard and duct tape to get the shape right - laid down the resin (must be marine grade) and matting - and 5 years later - no delaminating at all.
Actually - I fiberglassed most of the seams - where ever there was perforation rust - used a disc grinder to grind to clean metal - and then fiberglassed away. I also rebuilt the much corroded battery tray.
The old 78 242 is dust proof, moisture tight - and solid.
I have spoken to others who have used regular resin - it absorbs water and brakes down over time.

that space is part of the "Flow Through Positive Ventilation" path. (actually probably the best spot for any spare fuel can that may, against all rules of good sense, have once been used for that purpose)

Where the guys at the impound yard will find it after you've been carted off to the morgue and the car's towed in. If you need a sidearm, you need it where you can get it without getting out of the car and opening the rear cargo area.
Geez, you're in Texas! go get yourself a carry permit and keep it up front.

Thats where I hide my drugs. All jokes aside, I keep a small EMT kit in there (bandages, pocket mask, EpiPen, etc.), just in case, along with all the typical roadside gear (jumper cables, flashlight, etc.)
