parking brake cable broke at/near handbrake area 700 1990

Yanked up on the handbrake yesterday and POP the cable snapped. I opened up the center console area to get a look at it, hoping that something had simply slipped off the handbrake lever, but alas, the cable was broken. Here is a picture of the piece that snapped off:

The procedure in the FAQ doesn't mention anything about replacing this particular part of the cable, or maybe I'm just reading it wrong. Do I have to replace the entire cable all the way from the handle to... what is it, the left wheel? Man, that's going to be a pain, especially in the cold weather.

Any tips?

Thanks.

So long as you raise the rear of the car the job isn't too difficult. You have to be careful with the routing of the long cable under the car and into the centre console housing. As John says, be careful with the cable connection to the brake shoes. You'll need to remove the rear LH brake caliper (NOT the brake line), then the drum, to access the shoes. Post again if you're not sure how to proceed. Regards.

Yes, you'll need to replace it from the emergency brake handle to the left rear wheel. You can use my garage to do the work. It is quite comfortable inside. A new aftermarket cable is $39 from FCP Groton. The only tip I can offer is to look closely at the attaching point at the left rear brake before you remove the parts. There is also a clamp held by a 10mm head bolt under the car

Usually it is manual transmission cars which suffer broken emergency brake cables. Most people with auto transmission cars don't use the emergency brake that much.

Let me know when your garage moves to NYC and I'll most definitely take you up on the offer! ;-)

Anyway, yeah, I'm a bit weird in that I use my handbrake on an auto, but that's just the way i am I guess.

Thanks everyone for the info. I can put this off for a bit since it's an auto. Will order a cable from FCP tomorrow.
