Whats a good msd box for a fully modded b20 engine? 120-130

Looking to add a msd box to add a seperate msd coil and not use the old stock one. I already have the crane xr700 system and everything has been done to the engine. I saw a few diffrent msd boxes. Which one would work the best with a b20 with weber carb, k cam?

On carb stock engines (B18, B20, A or C cam)you can use a MSD 5 box. On engines with more punch (k cam, like so), I suggest a 6AL (the one with rev limiter). More powerfull boxes are a overkill for our engines.

I'm using the MSD 6A ~$150. The 6AL has a rev limiter built in for $180ish.

You will not be able to use your stock tach with an MSD unless you figure out a conditioning circuit to drive it. A phone call to MSD support might be helpful here. I had no luck - I am using an aftermarket tach.

Having built and dynoed quite a few stock and highly modded B20's I can only say that those 'super ignition systems' don't offer any power increase over a stock system that is functioning correctly.

Instead of spending the money on such systems it is much more beneficial to have your distributer rebuilt and converted to a breakerless system (like the last B20's had, or an optical system like the lumenition). A worn distributer will cause power loss and can eventually kill your engine. Switching to breakerless ignition will not boost power but make the thing more reliable and avoid the problem you have with points: floating at +6500 rpm.

I am NOT saying systems like Crane and MSD are not good, in certain applications they definately are beneficial, like turbo engines running astronomical boost pressures where a traditionnal spark isn't powerfull enough to jump the gap or very high rpm engines (+10000 rpm)

      Best regards

      Stefan
