Changing 245 Air Filter 200 1988

Hello All, I know this is a ridiculous question, but did not seem too easy trying it in -8F temps this am! I attempted to change the air filter and had a problem removing the housing cover. It has two metal straps on top that unlatch but then the bottom has something else. I did notice that the cover has a 8" crack where I suppose the previous owner had the same difficulty getting it off. Any advice would be appreciated! Noel Smith Morrow, Ohio

Note which way round the filter goes. It is fiddly getting the new one to seat properly in its slot, but worse if you have got it back to front.

Ugly ducking is right, don't even mess with another way.

Removing/loosening the clamp on the inlet side of the AMM will allow the amm and accordian hose to move rearward and down. Push it that was as far as possible.

Then take the air filter cover, short hose piece attached, and tilt the top rearward a good bit. The bottom of the filter cover has hook-shaped pieces that lock into the filter box. When the cover is tilted enough, lift is straight up, the hooks will clear.

You may want to loosen the clamp holding the short piece to the filter cover so you can twist it into a different position. Don't try to remove it, that's a waste of time and it might crack.

Good Luck,

Bob

hello!

if it's anything like the '89, you have to also remove/loosen the amm or the 3"-dia. hose. if I remember correctly, loosen one of the metal hose clamps and gently slide the accordian-looking hose (attached to the filter cover) from the amm. this should give you some room to pull back the filter cover and up out of the way. I think the bottom of the filter just has two slide-in points and the top has the straps. believe me, before discovering about detaching the amm hose from the amm, I was completely pulling hairs trying to put the cover back on. I thought I was going to break the filter box or the cover, or damage the new volvo filter I had purchased. trust me, you need to disconnect the amm hose to put the filter cover back on. you won't believe how easy changing the filter is after doing this! somehow I was able to remove the cover without having disconnected the hose! but I remember it was hard! I hope this helps. maybe someone can give you better info, but I understand yer frustration.

Thanks for the advice, I am happy that it will be that easy after my last attempt! I will repost tomorrow after replacing this and thanks again Ugly Duckling and Bob. Noel Smith
