My '88 240 Sedan will barely idle! *UPDATE* 200

Thanks to everyone for they're help! And, all thoughs who said it was the AMM, you get a cookie!

Now I have to get a new one. eEuroparts.com seems to be the cheapest so far at $119.50. I paid over $170.00 for my 900, so that's not too bad. Well, it says on eEuro, that you also need to buy an airbox thermostat? What's this all about? Is mine most likely bad too, or are they just shaking me for more money? Yeah, $7.99 isn't that much more, and I'm all for it if it's really going to make a diffence. But, they don't explain why I need it. Any thoughts?

Courtney

Many on the board, myself included. Permanently solve the thermostat issue by removing that silver preheat hose completely. The only purpose it serves it sot get the engine up to operating temperature a little sooner and so burning fuel more efficiently a little sooner. It's an emissions thing. So you will only have a problem doing this if you live where they do emissions inspections and you don't put the hose back on for your inspection.

Personally I would buy a used AMM on eBay. In fact I have bought them and now I take them from the pick-n-pull when I find them and sell them on eBay. I have yet to hit on a bad one. New ones are outrageously priced and a lot of people on the board have had bad experinces with rebuilds. I don't happen to have a 007 AMM right now or I would offer you one. You could probably buy 3 or 4 used 007s for the price of a rebuild. I think the odds are in your favor there. In fact, buy two and put one in your trunk. If the first one ever does fail, this is a part you can easily replace on the side of the road.

Thanks and I'll take the cookie. But I would recommend a nice used 0 280 212 007 Bosch AMM off Ebay or Brickboard classifieds (~$50) over a rebuilt one. Furthermore, I would recommend pinning the flap in the airbox to admit fresh air only, or pulling the guts out of the box altogether. Fiddling with that stupid little thermostat is just more trouble than it is worth and it will go bad soon.

If you disconect the connector ( Key OFF) to the AMM does it idle fine? If so you need an AMM if not it is something else. Dan

the airbox thermostat opens and closes a flap that lets in only warm air pulled in over the exhaust manifold to help the engine run better when cold. Once the air gets really warm(thus, indicating that the engine is warmed up and can now take in unheated air and still run ok)the thermostat will close this flap.If the thermostat is broken, you get only the warm air, all the time. This can eventually fry your AMM. The folks who sell AMM's obviously don't want to exchange a bunch of AMM's that were ruined by a bad $8 part.

Mike
