OD/4th is doesn't engage until about 60mph 200 1989

I've noticed this two mornings ago upon entering the freeway on my way to work. normally it would upshift to 4th at around 40-50mph. I don't mesh on the gas hard when I'm entering the freeway ramp; I do it more at a conservative, safe, gradual way. does that have anything to do with it? am I supposed to gass it a bit more aggressively to engage OD immediately? what does this sudden change in shift pattern mean? relay? solenoid? or is this more a throttle cable issue under the hood?

ps.
I blew #10 fuse using a higer-amp fuse in it. could that have any connections to it?

thanks.

The overdrive seleniod might be going. There is a spot on your fuse panel for the overdrive. You might want to keep your Eye on it.

if you have a sodiering iron/gun it is a free fix
search and you will find pictures and a write up

open the box and look for cracked sodier joint by the brass legs
a simple reheat to melt the sodier will fix it

Solenoid is not a solderable repair item... 200 1989

. . .and the operation may be normal, as Dave suggests below.

IMO, if it really is a delayed shift, it is more likely to be due a tight or binding kick-down cable, or the need for a fluid flush — rather than anything in the solenoid or its control circuit.

Try the cheaper fix first--lubricate your kickdown cable (NMI) 200 1989

Well It sounds normal to me, you probably just were on the gas a little heavier than usual. My '88 usually shifts into 3rd at around 55-60 entering the freeway and 4th when I let off after merging into traffic at around 70-75. I don't know where you are but in Southern California that's just how you have to do it to prevent becoming a statistic. Around here conservative is far from safe when entering a fast moving flow of traffic, good way to get rearended or have someone pass you trying to merge.

As to the fuse, the fuse box cover will tell you what the fuse went to. The fuse will either cause the OD to not work (blown) or work (good) it will not cause a change in how it works.
