Drive Shaft ; Fuel Pump Relay 200

Hi all from Friendswood,Texas! Been a while since I've been on the boards, but I am getting ready to get by brick ('85 245) back on the road. Two problems: 1) need to replace/resolder fuel pump relay 2) carrier bearing screaming like a 727 (well it was when the car actually ran!). I think I have the right parts ($87.00 for the carrier bearing and the relay!@#$%^), but I've never attempted either job. Aside from marking driveshaft front and back for reinstallation - any gremlins to watch for? Is the fuel pump relay located behind the front center dash? Any helpful hints would be appreciated. I'll be under the car by 9:00 am tomorrow. Thanks!

You should also replace the rubber support bushing, spring and cup . Check the condition if the U joints while the driveshaft is out. Dan

Was thinking about doing a center bearing myself, looks easy but I did have a conversation with a co worker and he mentioned that getting it balanced at a machine shop was critical.
I'm jealous about being under the car, expecting up and over 2 feet of the white stuff up here in NE. Have fun

Has it been that long?

I'll leave the driveshaft question to someone else, but the fuel pump relay is a popular topic tonight. If you unsnap the felt above the passenger's feet, you should see the fuel pump relay hanging right from the firewall where a tall Texan's toes would be. Just happen to have a picture of what you'll resolder. If that doesn't do it, be sure to look over that blade fuse holder and red wire at the battery.

Good luck!

Thanks Art! Great pics. At 6'5", I might be able to remove the relay with my toes! :) It's been over a year since I have driven the wagon, but since my 15 year old daughter will be driving within about 6 months, I am putting it back together. I wouldn't want her driving anything else! Thanks again for your help. Stay warm up there - supposed to be about 70 degrees here tomorrow! Take care!

Well, thank you. I'm bracing myself for the outdoor mess right now.

I thought you'd be deluged with advice on the center bearing job, one I've somehow escaped in my mini-fleet. You might have a look at the 700/900 FAQ; a lot has been added in the past year or two. I'll check that out when it is time to do the center bearing on one of mine.

If Volvo Dad wasn't already "patented" I'd find that a descriptive handle as it seems a lot of us have found the RWD Volvos ideal for their children from about any angle you look at it. So you, will become a passenger, and with your height, you'd better keep that relay out of the way of the "driver's ed brake pedal".

Too right! I might even need to reinforce the floor pan on the "driver's ed" side. Good idea on checking the 700/900 FAQ's. I keep forgetting that so much info crosses over.
Thanks again!

I don't believe any FAQ info crosses over for the d-shaft & center bearing. Especially that bearing. I've done both kinds, and will take the 240 type any time.

I don't worry about marking the end flanges, as I don't believe they were ever part of the balancing equation. But DO mark the relationship between the front and rear halves. That's really important.

Good luck,

The shafts seem pretty similar, as I recall from doing the 940 Center Brg some 22 months ago. But that CB is something else.

Check the FAQ for somebody's better idea of a replaceable center bearing. I don't remember the details, and feel it's best that way.
