chimes on braking, once again Evan nailed it 200

I had the same chime on my 1983 245GL in pre-brickboard days. Called my indie tech - same answer. All brake lights out means chime comes on. He didn't know how that works, and nothing I have found in the Volvo Wiring Diagram books explains it. I think it's not even in an owner's manual.

I my case, both bulbs were burnt out.

Good Luck,

Bob

because both (or all 3) brake light bulbs aren't working. The failure sensor doesn't check for this. The chime somehow does, nobody can sucessfully explain this to me, but that's how it goes.

Wish I knew what year we are talking about because I'm equally mystified by these reports when I read them. Year and whether has cruise would help.

Thanks for the info on years guys; the only time I checked into this was on a 91-- there was no chiming with the brake light fuse open, just the inability to take it out of park. That I understand.

The Bentley has the chime version in the diagrams, but it is the US seat belt reminder you're looking for, I think in the upper right if I remember. I have a map of its innards. Never found anything supporting this function as an intentional design.

Art Benstein near Baltimore - don't know which music I enjoy better, that chime or the buzzer in the 79;-)

I have a '90 240 "parts" car (I haven't quite "stuck the knife in it" yet though), and I deliberately removed a fuse to prevent a battery drain, I believe. This caused the chime during braking sypmtom. Unfortunately, I don't recall which fuse it was - maybe the one for the headlights, so the battery would charge faster, or the one for the glovebox, because it didn't close. I think Ray will find that one of his fuses is gone, or not making proper contact.

I don't think the car has cruise, although I believe it has wiring related to cruise on the back of the instrument panel.

BTW, I couldn't find the chime circuitry in either the Haynes or Bentley manuals - not for '86, and not for several other years that I checked. Am I missing something?

Check the brake light fuse for corrosion where it contacts the fuse holder terminals.
