I took #7 fuse out and cranked it over with gas line disconnected at the fuel fuel filter,no gas came out,should the prepump pump if the main pump is disabled? Or what is a simplistic way to check; is there one? main pump is howling big time,and the car started chugging a little as the gas tank got lower...Kris

Why not loosen one screw and pull the fuel line off the back of the main pump. The in-tank should deliver fuel there when you crank.

Fuse 7 affects the whole FI system, not just the Main pump. There would thus be no power to either pump.

You can run just the tank pump by removing fuse 5 and jumpering voltage from the input (left) side of any fuse 6 -- 10 to the RIGHT fuse 5 contact. You should be able to hear the tank pump humming at the filler opening.

Sounds likely. Find the connector wire over the tank under the rear floor.
By connecting and disconnecting the connector you may hear whether the pump is working. A better test is to use ampmeter to measure current draw of the pump at the connector. If no current, pump or wiring is broken.
Even taking out the pump is not too hard to check it, using the IPD bung nut tool is a good idea.
