PM Replace Flywheel Sensor 900 1992

My Volvo shop wants me to replace my flywheel sensor at the next scheduled maintenance 155,000 as the part is OEM. Their price is $125.00. On Groton's web site, they have an "RPM/Ref. Sensor located at Flywheel" for $29. Is this what they are talking about. If so, is it something I can replace? I'm o.k. doing regular maintenance, relays, etc. but am not comfortable jacking the car or messing with pressurized systems. Thx.

Read the 700/900 FAQ in the Features pull down. The procedure and a few caveats are there. The sum it up, the bracked that the sensor resides in is somewhat fragile...don't force it if it won't come off. If it breaks then you have to remove the transmission to fix it. A $30 sensor could turn into a $600 nightmare.

Don't be afraid to do the job yourself, just be aware of the procedure and consequences.

If I remember correctly it is either a 10mm hex bolt or someting like a 6mm socket head bolt that holds it on. Very difficult to see it but easy to replace, just feel around with your fingers, it is on the top of the bellhousing on the passenger side of the car, you will feel the cable, just follow it to the sensor. 10 minute job, if that.

Dear Thresher,

Good a.m. and may this find you well. If you have -
(a) 3/8" or 1/4" socket tools
(b) a total of 21" of extensions
(c) a universal joint
(d) some fingertip sensitivity
(e) a bit of patience -
you can do this job.

See the FAQs, under FEATURES, above (http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineSensors.htm#Crank_Postition_Sensor ).

You can get the sensor from www.fcpgroton.com. If you call them, speak with Nick Bauer, who is their Volvo parts guru.

When you get this done, you'll have saved yourself about $100.

If, after reading the FAQs and looking at your car, you have any questions, postback with them.

Yours faithfully,

spook

I replaced mine once as the code came up on computer and car would not start. It fixed it. I got mine at the volvo dealer in indianapolis, must have been 5 years ago. It was around $30, not much more than that. My wife dropped me off it install it, I was home before she was. Difficult position, but only one bolt I believe, holding it in. You have to feel for it, but if you have the right wrench, no problem.

Code came up again lately, but it was actually the distributor cap that was the problem.

I would NOT pay $150 for one of these!
