Fear of doing ball joint job 1989 780 700

I have a question about spring travel when changing balljoints on a 1989 780. Do you have to secure the strut springs. The literature I have read doesnt really mention it. I called a few people and told me the strut has it own internal stop so it can only extend so far with the spring unless the stop is broken in the strut...any comments...thanks...Jeffrey

Na you shouldnt not have to worry about the strut popping out on you. Ball joints on Volvo's are fairly easy. Good luck.

On the 240's you would not. I recently cahnged the control arm and at the moment of unbolting the arm I had a fear of a shooting spring, never occured.
The FAQs for 700/900 series say no also ... Ball Joint Replacement
