Fluctuating temperature gauge 200 1986

The temperature gauge in my 1986 240 sedan is all over the place and is never accurate. The needle could be in the cold after running for hours, or it could be in the red after just starting. Any ideas??

that is more than likely a temperature compensation board problem

ipd sells a new compensation board and a bypass "kit" a giant fat staple

Either the thermostat is broken or the wire to the sensor has lost the insulation and is shorting.
