How do you kill a 940!! 900

Just joking, I`m new to this board, I own a 93` 940 that I bought new. I have over 500K and It still runs like new, even the compression is good. I hope to contribute to this fourm and wish I had found It years ago. I just bought a s80 and that is how I found this board. I will never sell my 940 too many good times in that car. If the world ever ends I know roaches will be the only survivors and they will be driving 940`s.

Regards,

Lane H.

940 better car indeed. The S80 is an impressive and roomy car, but too complicated too fast. Mine was a 2000 model with fewer problems than its predecessor. Still a risky car for long term use due to maintenance.

Tell us more... what type of maintenance schedule do you follow.... I'm intrigued...

P.S. does anyone know why my signature rarely works???? Is this a problem for anyone else??

How do you kill a 940!! 900

Hi matt,

I kept it simple, I changed oil at 10k intervals with syn. and I got it where it was on the 10k i.e. 480k 490k 500k.Other than that I did a dif. change every 100k with syn. I changed trans. oil every 10k, you can only drain 2 qts. out through the plug but I felt like even at that it kept it fresh. I got 405k out of my trans. I know now one will believe that but I did. I will say most of my driving is interstate so that helps the trans. live a longer life. As far as valves I checked at about every 50k-75k. It normally checked in limits. The flame guard is one thing that I stayed on top of to keep from killing the main seals. anti freeze every 3 or 4 years but I kept bars leak in there for good measure. Years ago I cross theaded a spark plug, drilled out and installed a heli-coil not problems there. I installed new radaitor. I have installed 2 fuel pumps. replaced the distributer one time. One alternator.
That may sound like alot but I added it up,my father spent more on his lexas in 70k than i spend in 504k miles. He had and computor and a power stering pump that went out. I still joke about that. I also have a 850bmw i love it but it is so complicated. They make everything difficult. Sorry so long I love cars especially volvos.

regards,
Lane from s.c.

there is a way to flush ALL the trans fluid by tapping into the trans cooler lines that enter the radiator. (very simple) But what have been doing seems to work just fine :) Congrats... BTW, thats not really much money at all that you have spent on your vehicle..

Dear s80nut,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. Welcome to the Board! >500K is awesome!!

I sure wish you'd "found the Board" long ago, because you have plainly done many things right, to have a car with 500,000K (miles or kilometers) on it, that's still going strong.

Looking forward to having the benefit of your insights.

Yours faithfully,

spook

240s,740s,940s. I have been working on these cars since 1978 and those are what I call in my minds eye "The Real Volvos".

Hey, it's easy, just run it without oil or coolant and it will soon be headed to the great junkyard in the sky! Other than that they should just keep on going till Jesus comes.

No coolant in a 940 ? No problem ! ! ! Happened to me last year and I hear the metal on metal sounds from the engine. My engine is still going strong. Guess I was able to turn it off just in time......
Go 940 ! I have a Turbo.
