Ignition timing on a 760 Turbo 700

Hi All,

How do I check the timing on my '84 760 Turbo ( B23 FT)? Is there a certain rpm that I need to keep the engine at?

Thanks,
Dave

Timing light. Powered by the battery, and connected to the #1 cylinder plug wire. Should be at idle.

Point the light at the crank pulley/harmonic balancer. The mark on the pulley should fall somewhere on the scale that is molded into the timing belt cover. I'm not sure what the timing should be set at but for my B21F and two B230FT engined it's 12 degrees BTDC. The scale on my engines is in 10 degree increments so it's difficult to set it exactly to 12 degrees with a standard timing light.

If you are going to buy one, I recommend one that can adjust the flash to a specific degree setting. These models also might have a setting where the RPM is monitored. More expensive than your typical light but worth every penny to set/check your timing and idle speed.

    Good luck,
    Bean

Thanks Bean. I just wanted to check the timing to make sure that it isn't off. My engine runs a bit too cool. Someone on here suggested that my timing could be retarded and is causing the engine to run too cool. The thermostat is new and it did the same thing with the old one. Temp sender and gauge have also been replaced. After warm up, the gauge only goes to 1/8th of the way up on the temp gauge.

      Cheers,
      Dave
