In addition to the other comments, check the small line connecting to the wastegate actuator. If it is broken, you'll notice the turbo whine.

Can you describe the whine. I ask this because my turbo will whine louder at times. What type of oil as you using.

The whine is high pitch and as the turbo kick in in increases. Currently using Mobile 1 and we are about 500 miles into the first stage of Auto-rx cycle. In Kansas and it is at freezing now and for the next week or so. Ed

You can remove the intake turbo hose and spin the rotor by hand to check if it is hitting the outer housing. If there is contact you should replace it ASAP. If not, then it is probably worn bearings that are causing the whine. It may not require immediate replacement but you are headed for a rebuilt turbo cartridge down the line sometime. It would be best to prepare while you have time. Find a reliable rebuilder in your area and get some pricing. If you are somewhat mechanically inclined this (installing a new cartridge) is not a difficult job to do yourself. Figure on a new oil feed line as it is the easiest way to get one that is guaranteed clean. About $40-50 bucks for the oil line from a dealer and $350-450 exchange for a rebuilt cartridge from a turbo shop. Do not try to replace the bearings yourself unless you have the equipment to rebalance the turbo at 100k rpm! The Mitshu turbo is fairly common so any rebuild shop should have one in stock or at least be able to rebuild yours quickly. Check the model info plate on your turbo to make sure you get the same model.

It warmed up this weekend and I went out and pulled the turbo hoses, the turboa had a little play in it but spun well. I did find the small hose from the turbo to the waste gate was broken, replaced it. The allen head nuts that were mentioned were also loose, tightened them. Put it back together and took it for a spin. No whine and the accelaeration seemed to be a bit better. Will fill the tank tomorrow and see if the gas milage increases some. Thanks for al your help and the ideas. You are the best.
Ed

The whine was coming from the broken hose. Been there, done that.
