hi all, a friend wants to sell me or trade 164e for my 70 ford f100. the car is 72 164e b30 motor 4 speed with o.d. on coulum. d-jet fuel inj. i have 240 models now. is this a car that could be driven daily? how bout gas mileage? car was owned by a b.b. for 34 years and bought new. 2nd owner is my friend. car needed work when aquired from the b.b.er. new cam, new fuel lines, fuel pump, exaust, looks great and i rate it about 8 1/2 out of 10. redone interior seats and dash. exterior was painted and looks great. many records kept by original owner. i love the look of this car. im not farmilair with the fuel inj setup, is it a problem? any info on this vehicle would be appreciated. i would probably have to sell a vehicle to aquire this one im running out of room. thanks

thanks to all for the input. this car is truly in nice condition. odo shows 124,000 miles, the first owner kept a log of maintenance records that would make a pilot proud. i know some k-jet and some lh 2.2 fi stuff. it has some small issues like some dash lights out and such. will have to check out closer. my friend worked for volvo for 15 years and knows d-jet, has a extra computer thing for under the passenger seat and some other stuff, he installed new seals on the fuel injectors and new fuel lines, and some hoses also. explained the way the dist works and such. i just dont know if i can part with the f-100 which was a one owner truck 302, c-4, 9" rear, shortbed. maybe i can somehow keep all my cars. my daily driver is a 85 244 turbo/intercooler with many upgrades. i will let you know as i am on the b.b. almost daily.

Sounds like a nice truck you got too... Keep in mind that trading to a friend sorta keeps it in the family, and maybe you'll get it back down the road... Were it 4wd, I'd keep the truck. But if 2wd... tough call. Maybe y'alls should trade for a week or so...

If your F-100 came with the 260 six then the 164 will seem very familiar to drive. Less tail-happy but similar. The mileage should be similar too but you won't have to mess with the carb.
D-jet is simple. Keep the bits in good repair (esp. vac. hoses and joint gaskets) and you shouldn't have too many issues.
If you kept the F-100 running and owned it for any length of time then you are perfectly aware of all the foibles of old cars/trucks. The 164 will have them too just in different places!
The thing is a cruiser. Long trips should be fine. You may wish to get different seats, however.
OD tranny. Definite major plus.
Heck, you can still put engines and hay-bales in the back!

Sounds like a very nice car... As has been said, the injection system is the biggest issue, but if it is in good order it works wonderfully. Sounds like the car has been well cared for, so you'd probably be OK.
Definitely a huge plus having the 4speed O/D. Both for drivability and reliability.
As for gas mileage, its gonna be a good bit worse than a 240. Got half again as much engine in front of you. It willa also be quite fast, which makes it fun to stomp on the gas pedal... If that sounds like you, count on 15mpg. If you drive casually, maybe 20-25mpg.
Someone mentioned not taking it on long trips.. I say hog wash. That thing will sing on the highway. Just be sure all the fluids are topped up and everything seems in good order. And keep a few spare bits just in case.
I'd say if the 164 is rust free, and as good as you say, it'd probably go in the neighborhood of $2-3k to the right person (of which there are admittedly few). What your truck is worth determines whether it would be a good trade.

My 74 144 bought new by my dad is still my mom's daily driver, and occassionally, we take it on long trips cross country to keep the engine in good condition as well as to dry out the mufflers. No problems whatsoever...

Sounds nice! 4spd OD is a real nice bonus - it seems like a fair number of 164's came with auto transmissions. Most parts are no longer in your corner parts store, but with the internet they are still readily available and will get to your doorstep within several days. D-Jet can be problematic when someone has been 'tinkering' with it - treat it properly (electircally, not mechanically) and it is very reliable. There is little need to change from it if the engine remains stock. I don't know a lot about the mileage of 160 cars - but the 4spd+OD transmission will get better mileage than the auto version would.
The only issue with driving one as a daily driver would be if it were your *only* car - which doesn't sound like a problem to you. Occasionally, 30 year old cars will need repairs and you might need to drive something else for a little bit. But not driving an old Volvo is harder on it than driving it is.

I use my 4spd 164 as a daily driver. No complaints. My mileage is 15/18 but a tune up could probably help out a bit. You'll love it.

I've never in 17 years had a problem with the djet on my 142,but what really made it smoothe out and get good mpg -30 mpg hiway was the crane electronic ignition. Sadly, rust happens.

It's harder to get parts than a 240, but it looks better! If you don't love the looks, don't buy it. I have heard the the mpg is 20-24. The Djet is a bear to keep working -- some on this board have converted to Megasquirt, check it out.
Watch out for rust, it will raise its head in the spare tire wells first. It's 33 years old and very advanced for it's day. No ABS, TRACS, air bag, belt tensioner, but very heavy steel. It will need tlc and it will be happiest as the first choice to be driven every day. Take another car for long road trips.
Have lots of fun,
Klaus
PS. Mine is in the shop getting new brakes, I get it home this weekend, I hope.
