Rearish whine 700 1991

My 91 740 T wgn has an odd noise. A whale type whine varies in pitch, notice only in very cold (-15C)& 40 kph while accelerating/decelerating only. The sound really floats around the rear of the car.
It is not the brakes, engine, turbo. It is in the rear axle or driveshaft I guess. It is not noticeable when the car has been parked in a heated garage for 8 hours. But it is very noticeable when the car has been parked outside in -15C overnight. Sound lessens as car is driven more +30min @ 80 kph+.

Any ideas would help.

    I had a diff cover rust out on my 86 744, causing fluid loss and whining. Check the fluid level back there in case your gears are slowly grinding away!

    My friend, who is a Volvo certified tech knows its cold out when his driveshaft center support bearing whines a little bit in his '93 940. Sounds like same symptoms. He still hasn't fixed it.
