S90 - Many questions S90-V90 1998

Group:
Not new to volvos with many 2 and 7 series cars over the years. But just got a cherry S90 with only 70K miles and I am wondering about many things. I found a green Volvo wiring book and a complete 940/960/S/V90 parts list.
I will be starting a number of threads.

First is that I am lacking the unpainted air dam on the lower part of the front bumper. I got one off a 960 but it does not fit. It is too short. The parts book now says the part is found on '95 onward 960 and S/V90 cars. SO anyone in the NE US want an earlier air dam? Anyone have a spare airdam for a '95 and onward?

Next is that if I look under the bumper I see an oil cooler. Am I missing another piece of plastic? The parts book says I am not. A 960 through '94 has a piece which seems to protect the oil cooler, if there was one.

Appreciate all information.
I will be able to identify part numbers from the parts list if anyone wants info.
THanks,
Rich

i would be interested in your front air damn. I presume it is the flat black unit that clips on beneath the front bumper. I have a 1997 960 sedan--I presume it would fit?

Regards,
Riber

Congradulations you have one of the best Volvo's every built. Take care of it fot it's the last of it's kind.
With 70k miles on the car, has the timing belt been changed? If you don't know or can't be absolutly sure get it down to the shop and have it done right now. Thes engines are interference engines and if the timing belt go the whole engine goes with it. Have 205k on mine and still runs like a champ.
Go to www.auto r-x.com buy a couple bottles of this product and do the treatment, after completing that, switch to Moble 1 synthetic oil. Go to the faqs pages and check them for the transmissions on these cars. Flush the tranny with moble 1 syn trans fluid. Get all that down and you are not going to belive how smooth a car you have.
As for being able to see the oil cooler under your car, sounds to me that you need a skid plate for you vehicle. I just bought a HD one on line from
Fcp Groton-Volvo. Cost was 38 bucks and the hardware mounting kit was another 8 dollars. There is supposed to be one there on your car, sounds like it was taken out when your air dam went.
Good Luck

THe parts list does not show anything between the air dam and the oil cooler.
Earlier ones had a panel of some kind.
I hate to add anything that might reduce airflow to the oil cooler because the car will be used for a lot of trailer towing.
Mobil 1 ATF is planned, along with Mobil 1 10-30 engine oil.
Already changed the belt and water pump.

do not use 10w30 S90-V90 1998

If you are going to do a lot of trailer towing do not use 10w30. The owner's manual specifies 15w40 for trailer towing, mountain driving and high speed travel and any situation that raises oil temps. If you plan on using Mobil 1, 5w40 is a good subsitute. You don't want your existing oil cooler exposed to the oncoming air from below. The oil cooler uses engine coolant to stabilize oil temps.
Also install a transmission cooler.

Well, don't know what the parts list says, but the 96 960s had three "plastic" parts on the front end, and I'd figure that yours would also:

1. The plastic trim piece below the front bumper that you are missing and trying to find;
2. A plastic air flow pan that fits into the bottom of the front bumper trim piece and bolts up to the cross member, with two air vents in it;
3. A belly pan that is pretty much the same as the one in the other 900 series cars (and similiar to the ones in the 200/700 cars) that bolts up right behind the air diverter.

I agree with you about fear of all the oil system paraphernalia hanging down so low to the ground on the 960/90s. It seems so vulnerable there, including the oil filter hanging down there.

Hope you can find the parts you need. As someone pointed out, the belly pan is available from the usual online sources (FCP Groton, EEuroparts, etc). I haven't seen either of the other parts offered on a new parts page. Might want to check with Erie VoVo, a huge parts yard that has good prices and my experience is that they offer quality used parts and quick shipping. On the web at http://www.erievovo.com/.

Hope this helps.

Mike

Mike:
Thank you very much for your interest and help.
What I initialy mistook as an oil cooler is simply the bottom three inches of the radiator. I see no attachment points (yet) for a flat panel in front of it.
My parts list shows the panel on 940 series from '91 onward and the same part number is shown on the 960 in '92 thru '94. As I mentioned before it does not show the flat panel on anything '95 or later.

Guess I will have to resolve this at a dealer.

As I look carefully the list seems to be for repair estimates since it shows prices and R&R times.

I have an undamaged belly pan under the engine. Oddly, the car I got the air dam off of did not have the flat panel, or it was torn off. It would have impeded my removal of the air dam.

The parts list shows a small rectangular oil cooler assembly as well, but that is probably for estimating repairs on cars equipped with an OEM accessory cooler.

Probably the cars at Erie PA are as snowbound as I am, but I will give them a call.

Thanks again on this topic.

Erie Vo-Vo is actually in upstate NY near Utica. I have ordered several used parts from them in the last year and have been very pleased with their service. The parts arrived in good condition and they ship items out immediately when you order. Whenever we need a used part we call them first.

Poolman,

Is the skidplate from IPD for your 960 metal?

Dewfpo- It's not metal, talked to Nick and was told that this is stronger and more flexible, won't bust apart as easy as the OEM part. It's made by Scantech though but maybe everything they make isn't junk. Anyway the part is still cheaper than the OEM from my dealer.
Take Care
