Stuck in Turbo? 700 1989

My 740GL wagon is "hanging up" is what I would call a "passing" gear, or maybe the Turbo. Your comments would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

CORRECTION!! I'm going to have to start leaving the garage door open more often. My brick isn't a GL it is a 740TURBO Intercooler. To those of you who responded to my plea for help... thanks. I'm still stuck for a "what to do."

sticking downshift cable. Release it from the drum. 700 1989

If it upshifts readjust the cable. If it doesn't upshift, make sure the cable moves in and out (it's spring loaded)...if it won't move in when you pull and release it, then it's hung up in the cable or down in the tranny.

You may have to release it in the trans to figure out whether it's the cable or something internal.

Congrats! This means your car is more fun! However, you still can't be "stuck" in turbo. The turbo is exhaust driven, so as soon as you are creating exhaust, the turbo is spinning. Turbo boost is, of course, spinning faster...but still no "sticky" wicket here.

If the overdrive light is on, the little arrow, that simply means that you don't have 4th gear (overdrive). So, is the light on? Is the light not on, but when you drive your car do you only hear and feel it shift twice?

      A little more feedback here...

      Chris

        Thanks Chris,

There is no light on.. (orange arrow)

The brick feels like it's in third gear... like dragging hard...

Mileage not as good as it has been in the past but nothing drastic (19-20 per gallon)

        And now what???

        Your comments are appreciated.

        Richard

There is no light on.. (orange arrow)

Light off means the OD relay is "ON", trying to energize the OD solenoid.

The relay voltage to the light opposes the panel voltage on the other side of the bulb, so light goes off (no current thru bulb).

The active relay suggests the the Yellow/Blue wire from the relay to the solenoid is "open", preventing relay voltage from getting to the solenoid to select Overdrive.

Or, as JohnB suggests above, the kickdown cable may be out of its pulley and hung up or othewise binding enough to keep tranny in 3rd.

Do you mean that the little arrow light is on? I have had customers, in the past, believe that the button on the shifter was a "turbo" button. If your car is a simple 89 740GL, you have no turbo. If it is the little light you speak of, you have a dead overdrive relay.

If this isn't the case, and there is no light, just advise...and we'll go from there.

    Chris

      Chris,
You are getting very politically correct. I am just tired of people who don't know what kind of car they drive and haven't bothered to read the manual in their glove box. The winter weather must be getting to me!

        Klaus,

Many people, when purchasing their Volvo second hand, don't have an owners manual. Yes, people should be more involved in, intrigued with, and knowledge hungry when it comes to their automobiles, but then...I think that's why people visit this site, to learn...and you, for one, are more than capable, competent, AND friendly, when sharing your knowledge.

Me thinks some hot cocoa with EXTRA marshmallows might be just what this doctor ordered.

        Chris
