PV Fuel Gauge Wiring 444-544 1962

I made a, not paticularly successful, attempt at curing my speedometer rattle and non-functioning trip counter, and in the process managed to get the fuel gauge wiring screwed up. Yes, I labeled the red cable that goes to the contact that has only one cable connected to it, but made the mistake of attaching the label to the connector. To attach it to the gauge I had to remove the label. In the process it slipped from my fingers to mingle with all the other red fuel gauge cables behind the dash and, obviously, I didn't get them sorted out right. I can't find the fuel gauge on the wiring diagram I have, which is in Swedish. Anyone know the Swedish word for Fuel Gauge? I can pretty well puzzle out all the words on the diagram, but I'll be damned if I can find anything that gets close to "fuel gauge" in any of the germanic languages I'm familiar with. Even better, does anyone know of a site where a PV544 wiring diagram can be found in English. (German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Papiamentu would also fill the bill -at least, the reading part of it would.)

Thanks, all.
Ron: I should have spotted that one - like " combustible meter". What threw me off was the "Brun" wire. I seem to have only red wires, but I'll check again when the weather warms up. The car is back in its winter abode. The diagram I have is the same as on your site.

Phil: With the help I got I'll get this sorted out. I have a spare instrument cluster that has that same black wire, but the one in the car doesn't. Maybe I do actually have it hooked up right, but the sub-zero weather is keeping the gauge from functioning -- that's what is happening with the 142. After five miles of driving, a good hard slap on the top of the dashboard makes the gauge wake up.

Sil;

If you carefully study the wire lengths, where they reach and the terminals at the ends, I expect it might intuitively become clearer...the color code will certainly help...all the reds are supposed to be connected anyway...note also the wire gauge, which on the drawings is given in square millimeters....

See:http://www.intelab.com/swem/544%20Wiring%20Diagram.jpg

By my count, there should be 5 red wires (three 1.5, one 4.0, and one .75) on the power terminal of the fuel gauge... Bra"nslema"ter (those are umlauted a's)...hope that helps...

Cheers

Hmm...I seem to be missing one of the set. Must be the font I'm using.

Try your Character Map. Lots of fun! :-)

The Swedish word for fuel gauge is "bensinmaler". The five red wires should be connected to the fuse box, oil pressure warning light, heater switch, wiper switch and flasher. Good luck.

I have a wiring diagram in english. Will be glad to scan it and send via email. The positive post on the fuel guage groups the power for the turn signals, amp light, wipers and maybe one more item so will send the diagram soon.

Bob, there are so many versions of wiring in a PV over the years that I don't know what specific diagram applies to your car...

I don't know the Swedish word for fuel gauge, but the other terminal on it is where all the switched 12V for the dash is ultimately tapped off of. Wiring goes directly from the ignition switch to the gauge, and then there are several other (probably red) wires on the same terminal.

The fuel sender wire in the car I'm working on is black. ???

My sender wire is BROWN. Looks black due to age I think, but when I cleaned it with Acetone, it came back brown, like the trunk end is. I aalso used Acetone to clean all the wires under the hood. Instead of being a uniform black, now they are all their original colors again.

I've had my gauge panel apart so many times I finally just zip-tied the cluster of wires that go to the post on the fuel gauge together to keep them sorted.

Now my only problem is getting those besky light bulbs back into their sockets.

I have 3 in, 3 to go. I will have to remove the driver's seat back so I can lay down under there to reach them, I think. I should have put in LED's the last time I had it apart. That way I could have installed the lights on the workbench and just plugged in a gang plug to connect them all under the dash.

Yes, I know that you're supposed to be able to install the lights with the gauge panel connected but tilted forward. Mine just won't go in that way...the lights get tugged from their sockets and I end up standing on my head anyway! :-)

Steve,
Be careful with that lying under the dash with the front seat out and your feet on the rear seat. My doctor says that didn't cause it, but I swear I dislodged a kidney stone doing that early last month. I suppose one could say, "better out than in," but passing it was no picnic.

Could well be it's supposed to be a brown wire on a '62 -- the one I'm dealing with is a '59 and the wiring is somewhat different.
