I have found getting two fingers under the rotor and rocking it back and forth eventually loosens it. I would be extremely careful prying or hitting it with a hammer, you don't want to break the housing. Dan

Agreed- you're better off smacking it with a hammer than you are prying against the top of the dist housing. That thin aluminum is easy to break. Don't ask me why I know this.

My favorite these days is a BIG pair of channel-lock pliers. If I don't succeed in pulling it off, at least it's likely to crack it by squeezing. The pieces do fly...

The very first time I took one off, I had the same problem. I was afraid to force it lest I break something. I asked a tech I trusted who had many years experience on Volvos. He said "sometimes you just need to whack them with a hammer." I don't think I used a hammer, I think prying it up with a big screwdriver broke it free. I guess the bottom line is that sometimes, after years of being on there, they kind of get glued on. The shaft is tough and you can use a little muscle without worrying about it.

Good luck.

Thanks - it took the hammer. I actually had to break the old one into a bunch of pieces. Sorta like the O2 sensor the previous owners were trying to get 200,000 miles out of. I wonder if it has anything to do with the abysmal gas mileage!

I had to replace my header pipe since my O2 sensor wouldn't come out. Yup, gas milage improved dramatically.

The better trick is to keep it fropm getting quite so stuck the next time...

Take a Q-tip and smear a light film of silicone grease on the inside of the new rotor before installing it.

Saw this in the archives. Can't find it now. Two foot loop of clothesline. Grab middle to make two loops which hook "horns" of rotor.Pass large tool handle under upper strands,Grab with both hands and yank. Now go find your rotor Bjohn .
