960 2.9L other jobs with timing belt? 900 1995

Just bought a 1995 965 with the 2.9l six with 132k. I plan to replace the timing belt in short order. Any recommendations for other jobs whilst the front of the motor is open? water pump? I have just ordered the haynes book. Any suggestions for other shop manuals?

Also, recommendations for an internet parts supplier?

Cheers,

Ted

Other parts to replace while are doing the timing belt are:
    serpentine belt
sep belt tensioner maybe (others should chime in on that)
    Timing belt tensioner
water pump (get the volvo origninal from FCPgroton. Do not get anything scantech)
check all the pulleys on both belts for any weid noises binding or looseness. Replace accordingly.
You can also do spark plugs since you are going to remove the spark plug cover anyway. I like NKG standard or U groove myself. Other prefer Volvo original. You can also do an oil change while ur at it. If you do not know how old it is, replace the thermostat. Its cheap insurance. This is a good opportunity while you have the car up to give the engine a good inspection all around. Check for any leaks.
    Good luck.

      serpentine belt: yes, good idea
sep belt tensioner maybe (others should chime in on that): not absolutely necessary, but wouldnt hurt either.
Timing belt tensioner: Yes it is recommened at second change. Also the idler wheel.
water pump : yes definately, you are right there. Last time I ordered one from them they sent me a zimmerman brand, was about forty bucks, very nice.
If you are on the original radiator, you might want to be proactive and replace it too, it will go, just when is the question.

Not a bad job to do, take your time and make sure you orient the cams and crankshaft before you pull the old belt. You can hightlight the makes with nail polish. I used cable ties on the new belt to lock them in place on the cams when I put it back on. Good Luck.

    Dear Tedperkins,

May this find you well. I'll let the Board's 960 gurus deal with your substantive questions.

Many find that www.fcpgroton.com is an exellent supplier of parts: Nick Bauer and his colleagues are knowledgeable. If there's a problem with a part - sometimes factory-new parts are defective - they deal with it promptly. What they don't have on hand, they can get.

If you plan to do a lot of work yourself - as I sense you do - you might want to go to www.volvotechinfo.com. This is Volvo's publishing arm. Here, you can get the tech manuals used by Volvo MasterTechs. There is also an on-line service, www.alldata.com, that provides similarly detailed guidance.

For any questions, simply post: someone is likely to have the answer, or at very least, a way to get to the answer.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook
