How do I Improve Headlights? 200 1978

I've got a '78 262 that I'd like to improve the front lighting on. I don't want to change the stock look (four rectangular lights) but would like to increase nightime visibility. Are there kits or other resources (websites) that address upgrading the lighting? Thanks

    Are you lucky! 200 1978

If you've been reading this BrickBoard list regularly, you'll see that one of the most common discussions (along with the AW70 OD relays) has been about improving headlighting on '86-on cars. All of us '86-on owners ENVY you! We have to either make long term fabrication projects, or spend big bucks on imported Euroheadlights.

Not you, you lucky dog -- you've got sealed beam headlights, and quads, at that! Wow! Just get a set of Cibie E-code H4 substitutes* for your 4 rectangular lamps, and you've got the second best headlighting possible, exceded only by quad rounds (because a round parabolic reflector is more efficient, but don't let this bother you). The cost is nominal (compared to us '86-on owners), and the effort is negligible.

[* I seriously recommend Dan Stern; his website is provided in one of the other responses; and I also recommend Cibie over other makes such as Hella -- a personal preference.]

I've been using Cibie headlights as replacements for sealed beams on all the cars I've owned since the early '70's -- until, unfortunately, I got my first '86-on 240 (a '93). I wouldn't drive anywhere without either those Cibie substitutes, or real Euroheadlights; and you won't either, once you try a set.

There are further steps to improve lighting, such as using relays and heavy parallel wiring to ensure maximum voltage to the headlights; and using higher-wattage bulbs, but by far the major step will be to switch to E-code headlights.
