B230F 240 harmonic balancer coming apart? or not? 200 1986

The harmonic balancer, aka vibration dampener, on my 1986 244 is squealling and slipping - voltmeter shows it - but my "shop" leaks in the rain and it's been 30 to 45 degrees outside, so there's a delay in replacement.

I have a replacement, got from Nick Choy via ebaY, so I'm sure it's OK, but it is used. I have never seen a brand new one.

Question is: The front of the pulley portion is out from the rubber and the center part by about 1/8 inch. On the back, all three parts are flush.

When I saw that the one on the car has that 1/8 inch offset, I worried that the balancer was coming apart. But the other on I have looks the same. So - is that offset the way they are supposed to be?

Your response will be appreciated greatly.

Thanks in advance,

Bob (same old Bob, but cookies won't let me login)

I have a 245 1989, I just exchanged the harmonic balancer. It was not an easy job, espetially to torque the balancer to the main shaft. It you go trough the pain to exchange it I would reccomend to replace it with a new one. I bought it for about $50. Happy bricking Gabriel

Bob-
The pulley halves are not meant to be flush in front, if that is what you mean. What you want to look for is no cracks in the rubber, or after that, that the rubber is not extruding itself.
