940 Temp sensor.....!???!!?!!??! 900 1994

Hello, and thanks in advanced for everyone's help! I've got a 1994 Volvo 940 Wagon B230F, and I think that my temperature gauge stoped working because the sensor is bad. I was going to simply replace it, but I can't get the thing out! I think its the oil pressure sensor that is below (and to the rear of the car) of it, is really in the way, and on the top is the intake manifold. But I think I was reading in the FAQ that someone removed the sensor 1/4 turn and re-installed it, and by breaking off the corrosion, he fixed it. Is this possible? It used to go up to the cold mark, then start to flip around and ultimatley drop off. Any imput is welcome!!!!

Regards,
Tim

I had a bad temp sender on a 95 940. As you state, it is difficult to get a wrench in there. It would be a LOT LOT easier if you could slip a box end around the brass fitting, but the plastic part is in the way. I intentionally BROKE the plastic part off the top of the sensor and presto, I could fit a wrench around it very nicely. Got enough torgue on it to overcome the corrosion that was holding it in place. Then, I had my teenage son hold his finger over the hole while I carefully wrapped some teflon tape onto the new sensor. Screwed that puppy in there and because it was new, it was simple to hand-tighten. A couple of tries with an open end wrench tightened it up and it has never leaked a drop. Lost only a few drops of coolant during the procedure, and it was the first time my son ever got his finger wet.

Your gauge temp sensor is in the head, left side, beneath the #2 intake runner. The 2 wires are Yellow/Black and Yellow/White, according to my '93 940 diagram.

Maybe just working the connector a few times will do something.
