RPM surges suddenly 900

Hi All
1991, 940SE, 263K miles. RPM suddenly goes 500-600 up while driving at 65-70MPH and comes down by itself without the involvment of gas pedal. No gear shifting happens and car does not get any more power when the RPM goes up. What should I look into?
Thanks

Does the engine actually surge with an increase in car speed? Or is it just an indication on the tach without any change in speed?

Hi
This surge comes down by itself after few seconds and does not increase the power of the car or speed up the car. This indication is on the tach and I can feel that engine RPM has gone up.
Thanks

An increase in engine speed without an increase in car speed makes me think there is slippage in the tranny. I'd start by checking the tranny fluid level.

How long does the surge last? Does it occur at steady throttle or while accelerating/decelerating?
