My daughter's '84 242 turbo with manual tranny has a rhythmic knocking sound in the rear area. I feel like it is the drive shaft because it slows down as the car slows down and stops as I stop. Could this be the u-joint needing replacing or the rubber center piece on the shaft. Any ideas?

Can you notice a clunk when you take off or give it throttle?
That would be another u-joint symptom.

Considering its age I would say both need replacing, though it is most likely the u joint.
