Question about plastic reinforcement 200

I have been scratching my head trying to figure out how to mount speakers in the side rear seat panels of my '88 240 DL wagon. When it was purchased new from the dealer by my dad in 1988, he had them install 4" speakers in the plastic side rear seat panels. They held up for only a little while before the plastic started to crack... I'm guessing because of the weight of the speakers and the tension from the speaker mounting screws.

My question is this...

I'm planning on buying replacement panels from VoluParts here in Atlanta. I'd like to mount speakers in them, but I'm afraid they might crack again. Is there any type of plastic reinforcement material that I can apply to the backs of the panels to give them more strength? I'm thinking they probably make some sort of fiberglass spray or adhesive that'll do the trick, but I don't know where to look...

Any ideas would be greatly welcomed...

Thanks!
Drew

    Question about plastic reinforcement 200

Well, do you know any boaters? Most (if they aren't "yachters" that hire other people to do their work) are familiar with making hull repairs with fiberglass and epoxy -- which will hold up like iron!

I've redone my '84 240's lower rear fenders (where we all know it rots away) in such "hull repair" fiberglass/epoxy (first sealing the remaing, surrounding metal with POR-15, of course). Putting a little fiberglass and epoxy on the backside of those speaker panels will make them indestructable.

And yes, I'm familiar with those panels -- they're not much more than cardboard.
    Good luck.

        Question about plastic reinforcement 200

I've succesfully reinforced map pockets and e-brake consoles with POR 15 and fiberglass matt. scuffing the plastic with sandpaper allows for the POR 15 to bond to the plastic.
