oil consumption 900

Hello to all. A question about oil consumption. My 940 turbo currently has 15w40 dino oil. I was recently at a volvo dealership I happened to ask the service guy what grade oil I should be using in my car. He said 10w30. I guess my question is if I were to switch 10w30 would I be causing problems for myself, like unusual oil consumption or leaks doe to the thinner oil. Thankyou in advance.

As long as the engine isn't using or loosing oil now, you shouldn't have any problem going to a bit lighter viscosity. You might pick up a bit of fuel economy or pep, since the lighter oil will have just a bit less internal drag.

Same goes for a change to synthetic, if not using it now. If you have reasonably high mileage, you should probably use a good engine flush before switching to synthetic. I recommend the flush made by AMSOIL or BG. If you are willing to take longer to flush, you might want to try Auto-Rx.

Some say not to flush, may dislodge larger chunks and block some passageways. Synthetic will, over time, clean up the sludge in the engine. May require a few earlier changes, as the oil will go black sooner. At least that’s my experience. YMMV.

I can see no problems in switching to 10w30 - especially dino to dino. You might ...MIGHT, experience some problems with seals if you went to synthetic. I did it on a 91 940 w/170K and it developed some seal leakage. Then again, this was a sign that new seals were in order.
